Navigation Research

1. Mozilla
I think I like this website. The navigation is very clear, the design also very clean. Really easy for me to find what I want. The first page show us big icons and links to the newest browser and add ons, straight to the point to promote their products. I think that also because usually what user want when they go to software website is to download the software or plug ins, so they directly put the link there to make user can easily download their stuff. They also do not just give the links to download, but also provide small link about the product details, in case user want to know more about the product. The top navigation also straight to the point, easy to see.

When I go to the products page, there's two icons of the product in the middle of the page as the navigation to more specific page for each product. Below the title there's breadcrumbs navigation that shows the "depth" of the page.
For page with more content, there's sub navigation where all content being listed. The depth of the content showed by indent.

For even more content like page for developer, it lead us to somewhat micro site with more focus in its topics. There's navigation using tabs for the main topics, sub navigation at left hand side for sub topics, and normal text links for more specific topics.
Overall the site have very good and clear navigation. Each page maintains the consistency like the top navigation and breadcrumbs navigation. For page with many content they separate it and make it have its own specific page.

WebDesign Project 2 progress

Well, I try to research again for my Project 2, here's some interesting website about recycling
http://www.recycle.co.uk/
http://www.recycle-more.co.uk/
http://www.recyclenow.com/
http://www.recycleforlondon.com/

Mostly the website using table and got corporate looks. Main color as usual is green, except for http://www.recycle.co.uk/ where the color mostly orange with a bit green there. But I still prefer green though, the color orange makes me think more about global warming than recycle. Looking at those websites makes me think that here we don't really practice recycling stuff, while in overseas, especially in Europe and Japan, recycling stuff is quite popular (in Japan it more to must though).

Also some website about paper recycling:
http://www.paperretriever.com/
http://www.cmu.edu/greenpractices/recycling/paper.html
http://www.recycling-guide.org.uk/paper.html
http://www.tappi.org/paperu/welcome.htm

From there I got some interesting facts:
  • It is possible to achieve significant reductions in the cost of buying office paper by reducing paper use and reusing paper where possible.
  • Eliminating office from waste may reduce waste bills by as much as 50%.
  • Making new paper from old paper uses 30% to 55% less energy than making paper from trees and reduces related air pollution by 95%.
  • Each day American businesses generate enough paper to circle the globe at least 40 times!
  • 77% of paper waste generated in offices is recyclable.
  • Typical business offices generate about 1.5 pounds of waste paper per employee each day.
  • Nearly half of typical office paper waste is high grade office paper.
  • Recycling one ton of paper typically saves about 6.7 cubic yards of landfill space. A cubic yard of stacked office paper weighs about 380 pounds. Cost savings may be estimated by multiplying the tons recycled by 6.7 times the cost per cubic yard for waste disposal (if by volume) of by cost per ton (if by weight).
  • Commercial and residential paper waste accounts for more than 40% of waste going to the landfill. Eliminating this paper from our waste would nearly double the lives of current landfills.
  • Newspaper is recycled into newspaper, game boards, egg cartons, gift boxes, animal bedding, insulation, and packaging material.
  • Office paper is recycled into office paper, tissue paper, paper towels, and toilet paper.
  • Corrugated cardboard is recycled into new cardboard and cereal boxes.
From there I started making some analysis about what I want to do for my design:
  • Promote recycle paper
  • Make user understand how important recycling is
  • Make it fun, not too corporate. Some website that I visited got Interesting content, but the visual wise it's not so nice. But some corporate looking website like Recycle Guide still can make it interesting.
  • Show how to recycle paper
  • Show what can we do to the recycle paper
  • Target audience are teenager and young adults
  • Create mascot/logo, to make the website easier to remember
Some analysis for the logo:
  • Promote recycling
  • Green color
  • The shape of recycle triangle
  • Friendly looking logo
So here's the logo:
For the website I still want to use the concept that explain to audience that every paper that they use is the same as a piece of wood, that's why they must recycle paper, to reduce the amount of wood/tree that been cut just for a piece of paper.
OK, so far that's it my research for this project, will update later after I finished designing my interface! :)

T-Shirt design for Typography

My design for typo~ Please comment guys ;) I realy confuse in choosing color for the stamp. End up with the blue one. Actually I want the red one, but when I put there it's just... too much. So I stick with blue. The one with yellow and pink also like, but too funky and looks a bit gay on guy LOL.

And here's something a bit random... But Interesting! from movie V for Vendetta that I watch last night (I know the movie kinda old, but I just watched it las night anyway :p)

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished, as the once vital voice of the verisimilitude now venerates what they once vilified. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-à-vis an introduction, and so it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

LOL... count how many V that he said! :p

Website Review

Martha Steward

Very organized website with noticeable page description that help us to identify our position. Each page have the same style, only different color themes for each categories. Sub categories have the same color theme with parent categories that tell us we're still in the same categories, but if we click to a sub category, I found it hard to go to another sub category; we must go back to parent page first. At the bottom of the page there's many links that help us choose our destination.
Even though the navigation is quite okay, I quite confuse in reading the content because it good too many more section inside the page, when actually the user want to find some tutorials instead of galleries or many other section.
Delight
Simple navigation, but makes me confuse where I am in because the page do not really have any title to let us know where I am except for little triangle under the button. Mostly what I can see here are just items with their price, there's alo discussion link where user can discuss/review the items. When I click the discussion button, suddenly I'm in blog section where user comment on the blog entry. The good thing in this website that I like is they got search button that help user to find the stuf that they want to buy. Also the right navigation divided items into some categories that help user find the item they want. When I click the item it will me to a page that will describe the item, bigger photos, and some review. I think that's a helpful information for user to know more about the item that they want.
At the bottom there's some button that let us know which kind of payment that accepted there.
Netdiver
I like the simple and clean design, especially the navigation. Links to other cool website divided into their own section, like illustration website, photography, etc. The hierarchy also quite good, started from the banner, then the links below banner, and then the black buttons below the text link. The think that I don't really like is the title of the page. Sometimes I don't know where I am. The title text is small, and do not really describe the page. Good thing they have sitemap, or I'll lost. The page also TOO long, makes me tired scrolling my mouse :(

Deviantart
Good navigation with clean design, find it easy to go to certain page. The browse page also nice where we can find specific section for each artwork. And search button! I love big website with search button because it really help a user like me that easily get lost 8D The annoying thing is that sometimes there's full page ad if we're not a subscriber, but we can easily continue to next page though. New user also can easily become member, just by typing their desired username and voila! Become a new member 8D while existing user can easily log in from the any pages. Artwork thumbnailed neatly in tables, the color theme with only one hue do not make the website too crowded even though there's so many thumbnails there.

Mentally and Physically Tired

I'm mentally and physically tired right now. And no, I'm not blaming any particular subject. But I will blame the overall crazy schedule. We really don't get enough sleep and rest for the last two weeks. I feel stressed, and I also can feel the tension in our class. We all are tired like dead.
Even in Friday we don't get any rest!

We need to rush for all assignment that for last two weeks we sleep at 4am++ then getting up early for morning class, go back home at 5-6pm++, sleep until 7-9pm, do assignment again until 4-5am, and the circle continue again and again. Even though we work like crazy we also still can't finish our assignment. If we are keep procrastinating our work and then can't finish it on time, I can understand, that our own fault. But now, we work everyday on our assignment, got the tension to create great idea, but we don't have enough time to even think, develop, and execute it.

I really am in my highest breaking point now. Last night we do Digital Media 2 until 6am, and then sleep for 6 hours. I think I get enough sleep already, but no, even with 6 hours sleep my head still banging like mad. I can't think clearly when I attend the class. Even worse when the class end up so late, about 7pm++, have dinner, walk home, it's already 9pm. I sleep for almost 3 hours but I can't sleep peacefully, even in my dreams I keep thinking about my assignment. Now I wake up, in denial to do my assignment. I just feel like skipping it and go to sleep. Yes, I got choice where I can sleep now, but too bad if I sleep I will have no time to finish my assignment later.

*sigh* I really am tired, and for now maybe I still can hold on, but I don't know if it's already in mid term. I guess we REALLY need exploration week to relax our mind later. It's good that for now we got Chinese New Year holiday to give us a break, but after the holiday surely we will facing even worse condition, and in this time is where we need exploration week. I don't know why TOA don't give us exploration week anymore, since without exploration week, it really is killing us.

The end note is... GIVE ME A BREAK!!! =___________=
